| Pastor Chuck gave an interesting sermon Sunday about Christian community, and how love for our brothers and the community of the church is the primary way God manifests himself. (I John 4:12-No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us). I've been thinking lately about some aspects of this, both the Christian community and the decline or lack of community in our society today. I've come to believe that many of our social problems are at least partly caused by this lack of community, including individual discontent, school shootings, even terrorism.
On a similar note, I've been wondering whether sometimes in trying to meet our need for community through the church, we actually detract from fellowship. While we should obviously be involved in communities besides our Christian one, is there a qualitative difference between Christian community and fellowship? Or is fellowship just Christian community done right?
| I realized today that I don't actually do any physics. All I do is manage. I read reports and papers, ask experts about their opinions, ask them to do calculations for me, then take their calculations and write up a report. I'm getting really good at writing reports and making presentations.
I wonder if I can get a PhD from MIT without doing any physics.
| I've discovered a new alertness management tool. So some of you know that these days I'm hypersensitive to caffeine...a can of coke will keep me up till 8 am. Well, the other day a friend of mine dropped off a gallon of Starbucks coffee ice cream. After some nonscientific studies, I have discovered that one spoonful of ice cream will correspond roughly to about 2 hours of wakefulness. Every 2 hours I just need to take a hit and then I'm fine. | | |
| I have all this time on my hands these days so maybe I'll start posting and see if anyone notices. Haven't decided what to do with this yet...details of my life? political commentary? I generally like to keep my thoughts and opinions "undocumented" so nothing could ever be used against me in the future...but perhaps secrecy, while secure, also prevents one from making an impact.
I went running on Wednesday for the first time in a long time. Well, ok, Tuesday I did 2 miles around the track. But yesterday I ran with some high rock people from cambridgeport to the BU bridge, then along the river to the Longfellow, and back along Storrow drive on the other side. All in all, maybe 4.5 miles or so. Shin splints here we come.
